Another thing we can do is connect sentences to present choices using ‘or’. In Korean you can use the verb ending -거나 or the conjunctive adverb 아니면.

Creating choices with -거나

In this post I am going to explore how we can give options or choices. In English we use a little word for this called ‘or’. Like with ‘and’, Koran has a few ways to do this. You can either use a verb ending, -거나, or you can use the conjunctive adverb 아니면.

Like the previous verb ending -고, the verb ending -거나 is very easy to use as it does not create any irregular situations with any verb. You simply have to attach it to the verb stem and you are done. Most often it used only once in a sentence, but it can be used more than once just like the English ‘or’.

Creating choices with 아니면

However, you do not have to use the verb ending -거나. Since there is also a conjunctive adverb alternative, 아니면. Just like 그리고, 아니면 does not turn two sentences into one larger sentences. Instead it signifies that a sentence is part of a choice of the previous sentence(s). There is little to no difference in meaning between the verb ending and the conjunctive adverb. You can use them interchangeably to create some variation in your Korean.
